Clarifications About the Concepts of Noise Attenuation Levels, HML, SNR and dB

What is noise attenuation? The process of noise energy loss is called attenuation and it is the attenuation data that must be considered when selecting the appropriate ear protectors.

What is SNR? The SNR is a simplified description of hearing protector attenuation. The SNR value can be used to compare the level of noise attenuation offered by different hearing protectors. To determine the sound pressure in your ears, you subtract the SNR value from the average noise level measured. For example:

The noise level averages 99 dB.
Wear ear protectors with an SNR of 19.
So the sound pressure in your ears is on average 99 - 19 = 8th dB.
The higher the SNR, the higher the level of noise attenuation provided by the hearing protection.

What is HML? A method of assessing hearing loss based on 3 parameters.
H = High
M = Medium
L = Low
The terms refer to the measure hearing of protector attenuation in high (H), medium (M) and low frequency dominated (L) noise.

What are dBs (decibels)? Noise is measured in units of sound pressure levels called decibels (dB).
